What does 13S5P mean? Series and parallel explained

Short answer: 13S5P means 13 cells wired in series and 5 in parallel. Multiply them and you get the cell count — 65. The S number sets the voltage, the P number sets the capacity, and only the P number changes which empty case will take the pack.

Short answer: 13S5P means 13 cells wired in series and 5 in parallel. Multiply them and you get the cell count — 65. The S number sets the voltage, the P number sets the capacity, and only the P number changes which empty case will take the pack.

It is worth being precise about this, because the two numbers get used interchangeably in listings and they do completely different jobs.

The S number sets the voltage

Cells in series add their voltages. On Li-ion that is 3.6 V nominal each, so the series count multiplied by 3.6 gives the pack's nominal voltage:

Series countNominal voltageThe label buyers search for
10S36 V"36 V pack"
13S46.8 V"48 V pack"
14S50.4 V"52 V pack"
16S57.6 V"60 V pack"
20S72 V"72 V pack"

This is why the same physical pack gets called both "13S" and "48 V". They are the same statement in two notations — 13S is how the builder writes it, 48 V is how the controller listing writes it.

The P number sets the capacity

Cells in parallel add their capacity, not their voltage. Five cells in parallel, each of 3 500 mAh, gives 17.5 Ah at whatever voltage the series string produces. So the P count is where range comes from, and it is the number that decides how much physical space you need:

ConfigurationCellsWhat it is usually for
13S3P39Compact 48 V builds, folders, weight limits
13S4P52The most common 48 V pack; fits most downtube moulds
13S5P65Longer range — above the ceiling of the smaller moulds
13S6P78Mid-size housing and up
13S8P104Large downtube and rack moulds only

Why the S count still matters for the case

The P count sizes the cell block, but the S count sizes the BMS. A 13S battery management board has to manage three more cell groups than a 10S board, so it is physically longer — often 30–50 mm — and it needs its own mounting space inside the housing.

Most of the moulds in this industry were drawn when 36 V was the common e-bike voltage. That is the origin of the single most frequent fitting complaint we hear: the cells fit, the arithmetic is right, and the case will not close, because the BMS the mould was not designed around is taking the space the lid needs. If that is your situation, it is covered in detail in why your 13S5P pack will not fit.

How to use the two numbers when choosing a case

Write your configuration as two separate requirements and check them separately:

  • The P count decides the format. 52 cells fits most downtube moulds. 65 is above the ceiling of several of them, so 13S5P is often the point where the shape has to change.
  • The S count decides the internal length you need. 13S and above need allowance for a longer board than the 10S figure the drawing was based on.
  • The cell format decides how much of the interior you actually get. A Hailong-pattern mould in our range takes 117 cells on 18650 but only 80 on 21700. If you are building on 21700, the 18650 number is not about your build.

Put both numbers into the case selector and it narrows to the specific models that hold your configuration, with the opening length for each. For a per-format view of what each shape can take, the configuration index lists every build from 10S to 20S.

Common questions

What does 13S5P mean?
13 cells in series and 5 in parallel. The series count sets the voltage (13 × 3.6 V = 48 V nominal) and the parallel count sets the capacity. 13S5P is 13 × 5 = 65 cells.
How many cells is 13S5P?
65 cells. Multiply the series count by the parallel count: 13 × 5 = 65.
Is 13S the same as 48V?
Yes. 13 cells in series at 3.6 V nominal each is 46.8 V, which the industry labels 48 V. 13S is the builder's notation and 48 V is the marketing one; they describe the same pack.
Does the S or the P number decide which case I need?
Both, for different reasons. The P count sizes the cell block and so decides the case format. The S count sizes the BMS, and a 13S board is typically 30-50 mm longer than the 10S board that many moulds were designed around, so it decides how much internal length you need.
Can I fit 13S5P into a case that says it takes 65 cells?
Only if the 65 figure is for your cell format and the interior has room for the BMS. A case quoting 65 cells is normally quoting 18650; the same interior holds fewer on 21700, and the cell count excludes the BMS compartment entirely.

Send us the pack and we will confirm the fit

Cell type, series and parallel count is usually enough. If the answer is that none of our moulds fit, we will say so rather than sell you the nearest thing.
